In November 2016, Housing Plus was awarded funding by the Department of Justice to deliver local support services for male domestic and family violence victims across Western NSW.
We operate two services: case management for male victims of domestic and family violence; and representation of male ‘serious threat’ victims at Safety Action Meetings.
In delivering this service, we have gained some interesting insights into the intricacies and complexities of male domestic and family violence. Unlike the majority of domestic violence cases involving females – often carried out by male perpetrators in intimate relationships – the majority of male domestic and family violence cases we see are sibling or family abuse, often involving young people aged 16-18 years.
This, in itself, presents challenges and limitations for Housing Plus, particularly in our approach to assisting victims in small or remote communities, where there are few options to remove the victim from the household into a suitable refuge. Public transport is sometimes non-existent and many victims do not hold a driver’s licence. These factors propagate a culture of under-reporting, requiring us to drive cultural change through the active promotion of male domestic and family violence services in these communities.
As we continue to engage with communities and gather data about victims, we will work to identify program improvements, and set up new initiatives to support both victims and perpetrators of male domestic and family violence, providing more avenues for men to escape violence.
